Field notes — Mira Voss on the long arc of the Italian Wave
The Catchers' Union's leading Bel Paese researcher on why the Italian Brainrot Region behaves differently from anywhere else in the world.
Introduction Mira Voss is the in-universe Catchers' Union researcher whose field notes are referenced across most Bel Paese Rotmon entries. The interview below is a condensed and lightly edited version of a longer conversation conducted across three sessions in Naples in April 2026. The Bel Paese is a fictional in-universe Region; Mira is a fictional in-universe researcher. The observations are part of the canon, not a real-world account.
On why the Bel Paese behaves differently "The Bel Paese is the only Region whose density does not correlate with human population. The Feed scales with foot traffic. The Greenline scales with chlorophyll. The Cursed Belt scales with whatever it is that makes a 24-hour laundromat feel the way it does at 2am. The Bel Paese scales with something that I do not yet have a name for, but which I am confident is real, because I have watched a tile drift into Bel Paese behavior in a city that has no coastline and no Italian-speaking population and produces no Tralalero sightings in any normal week.
"What I think is happening — and I am being careful to say think — is that the Bel Paese is a kind of acoustic Region. It needs a certain ambient sound profile to stabilise. Coastal cities have that profile naturally. Inland cities can develop it temporarily, usually around a market or a fountain or a busy outdoor cafe. When the sound profile is right, the Region forms. When the sound profile is wrong, the Region cannot stabilise no matter what else is in place."
On the Italian Wave itself "The Italian Wave was not a release. The team did not design those Rotmons and ship them. The Rotmons were already there. The team confirmed them. There is a difference. By 2024 the Bel Paese was already producing pattern-stable accretions in Naples, in Bari, in Catania. The community sightings predated the dex entries. The dex entries are the documentation, not the source.
"I think this is the part the rest of the world has the hardest time accepting. The Italian Wave is not a marketing campaign. It is a regional phenomenon that the game's team had the good sense to log accurately. If they had ignored it, the wave would have happened anyway. The dex would just be incomplete."
On the Italian narration "The narration is the strangest thing about the Region and the part I most cannot explain. Players in cities that have never produced an Italian sentence on the street report wild encounters with full-length Italian narration. The narration is not added by the game's audio engine — I have personally verified the audio bus does not load an Italian voice file unless the encounter is already Italian-narrated. The narration is part of the encounter, not part of the playback.
"My working hypothesis is that the narration is a property of the Bel Paese itself. When a tile drifts into Bel Paese behavior, the audio profile of the encounters drifts with it. The narration is the Region asserting its own character. I cannot prove this. I am open to being wrong. I do not currently know what 'wrong' would even look like."
On the future of the Region "The Bel Paese has been expanding for two years. I do not see any sign that the expansion is slowing. The number of cities producing reliable Bel Paese tiles has roughly doubled every nine months since I started tracking in early 2024. If that pace continues — and I have no reason to expect it will not — most major coastal cities in the world will be producing reliable Bel Paese encounters by the end of 2027.
"What I want to know — and the question I am most likely to spend the next five years on — is whether the Bel Paese will eventually stop being a Region and start being the entire map. There is no theoretical reason it could not. The Rot is pressure. The pressure is not decreasing. If the Italian Wave was the first stable Region to form out of the modern attention economy, there is no reason it has to be the last, and no reason it has to remain bounded by the geography of one country."
What this means for players For active catchers, the practical takeaway is that the Bel Paese roster is the most reliable long-term investment in your dex. The Region is expanding. The Rotmons are not going to be retired. Bel Paese-completion is a moving target only because the Region keeps producing new entries — every existing entry remains catchable.
For new players, the takeaway is simpler: if you are within walking distance of a coastline, a market square, or any outdoor space with steady ambient noise and at least some Italian-coded character, you are within walking distance of the Bel Paese.
