How to play Brain Rot IRL
A complete beginner's guide. Five minutes to read, a lifetime to grind.
1. Open the game and allow location
Brain Rot IRL runs entirely in your phone's web browser — no app store, no install. Visit brainrotirl.com on your phone (Safari, Chrome, or any modern browser) and tap Allow when it asks for your location.
Location access is required because Rotmons spawn around your real GPS coordinates. We never track your movement when the tab is closed, and we never share your location with third parties.
2. Find a Rotmon on the map
The home screen shows a live map centered on you. Coloured icons within roughly 250 meters are wild Rotmons currently in your area. Each icon shows how far away the Rotmon is and which direction to walk.
Different biomes spawn different rarities. Parks and green spaces tend to spawn nature Rotmons (OK I Pull Up Capy, Cactus Lirili Larila). High-foot-traffic urban areas spawn meme-tier Rotmons (Skibidi Toilet, Sigma Tabby). Late-night spawns lean weirder.
3. Walk into catch range
You need to be within 30 meters of a Rotmon to start an encounter. The game updates your position continuously, so just walk in the indicated direction and the distance counter ticks down.
Pro tip: Rotmons don't despawn the moment you look at them, but they do wander. If a rare one shows up far away, don't dawdle.
4. Catch it in AR
Tap the Rotmon to enter the encounter screen. The game uses your phone's camera so the Rotmon appears overlaid on the real world in front of you. Tap and flick the Sigma Ball to throw it.
Catch chance depends on three things:
- Rarity — Commons catch easily, Legendaries flee a lot.
- Throw accuracy — center hits land more often than glancing ones.
- Ball type — upgrade your Sigma Balls as you level up for higher catch rates.
Missed throws don't always lose the encounter, but every Rotmon has a flee timer. Three misses and they bounce.
5. Sign in to save your dex
You can play as a guest, but your collection only persists on that device. Sign in (we recommend Continue with Google — one tap, no password to forget) and your dex, level, and quest progress sync to the cloud automatically.
Switch phones, clear your browser, factory reset — your collection is safe.
6. Daily quests and streaks
Every day you get three rotating quests — things like "catch 5 Common Rotmons", "walk 1 km", or "catch one Rotmon you've never caught before." Completing all three banks a streak day.
Long streaks unlock cosmetic flair, bonus XP multipliers, and increase the spawn rate of rare Rotmons in your area. Streaks reset at midnight in your local timezone.
Pro tips
- Walk in loops. The spawn algorithm rewards exploration of new tiles, not pacing back and forth in your kitchen.
- Limited Editions are pure luck. They spawn randomly anywhere, anytime — no events, no schedule. Most players go weeks between sightings, so don't waste a Master Rizz Ball on a Common.
- Don't waste good balls on Commons. You'll catch Sigma Cat in your sleep. Save the upgraded balls for Legendaries.
- Battery tip: Brain Rot IRL is GPS- and camera-heavy. A small power bank in your bag turns a one-hour walk into an all-day grind.
- Be safe. Don't catch and cross the road. Don't catch on bikes. Don't catch on motorways. Touch grass, not asphalt.
Ready?
Open the game and catch your first Rotmon. Most players land their first Common within 5 minutes of leaving the house.
